Side Crunches
Overview
This is a great exercise for your abdominal obliques. Your oblique muscles extend from under your arm here, down to your hip bone, down here. These muscles control bending and flexing at the waist, and also help with respiration. Obliques are very important.
Instructions
To begin, lift your knees up, with your feet still on the floor, as you normally would for a crunch.
With your hands at the side of your head, crunch at the waist, twisting your right elbow to your left knee. Return to your starting position, then bring your left elbow to your right now. Exhale as you exert energy, and inhale again as you relax.
Tips
You’ll often see people interlacing their hands behind their head. This common mistake will strain your neck.
When starting out, do three sets of ten. If you’re looking for a challenge, try four sets of fifteen reps.
Side crunches are a great variation on traditional crunches that work your obliques as well as your abs. Thanks for watching!
