With the right strategies, staying motivated can be achieved. Here are some ways to break through barriers and keep progressing toward your fitness goals.

What’s a Fitness Plateau?

Notwithstanding healthy habits and consistent workout routines, progress stalls are still part of any fitness plan and are frustrating and demotivating.

They’re usually reminders that your body has adapted to your current program and needs a new challenge. To continue improving, find new workouts, increase intensity, adjust nutrition plans, and try the following:

Create Realistic Goals

Unrealistic expectations usually end in disappointment and frustration, but breaking down your ultimate fitness goals into more manageable milestones makes them more achievable.

Set New Goals

A mental reset can motivate you to get back out there training. Reassess your goals occasionally to ensure they are attainable, and track any progress as you go.

Fuel Your Body Right

Because nutrition is key to breaking through a plateau and supporting your body, a protein intake boost can help break through a fitness plateau. Balance carbs to fuel workouts, fats to support hormone production, and protein to help build muscle.

If you’re starting a new routine, ensure your diet includes a healthy nutrition balance and stay hydrated. The longer you are active, the more you will need to drink to help replenish the fluids you’ve lost.

Mix Up Your Routine

Your muscles get used to the same moves. Add new exercises or variations of squats and lunges to reignite your progress. Switch the order of your routine to improve your mental well-being and vary your reps and sets.

Increase Workout Intensity

Gradually adding more weight challenges your muscles and helps them grow stronger. Reduce rest times to keep your heart rate up. Try high-intensity interval training (HIIT) like burpees for a powerful workout.

Get enough Rest and Recovery

Overtraining can lead to fatigue and hinder progress. When fitness plateaus crop up, it’s usually because your body needs more rest and recovery.  Engage in active recovery by performing low-intensity exercise following a few days of strenuous workouts to keep blood flowing and help muscles recover and rebuild from physical intensity.

Before you throw your whole program out, it helps to reframe what a plateau actually means:

Track Progress

By keeping a detailed record of your diet, workouts, and progress, you can identify patterns, areas for improvement, and possible plateau causes. Assess your progress regularly to keep yourself accountable and motivated, and take note of your progress.

Visualize A Successful Outcome

Visualization is a formidable psychological strategy for picturing yourself achieving your fitness goals. It increases motivation and improves performance. Picture yourself overcoming plateaus, completing challenging workouts, and reaching new milestones for a few minutes daily to make your goals feel more attainable.

Find New Motivators

When progress stands still, find new sources of motivation by reevaluating what drives you. Seek out the latest inspirations and set a new fitness challenge. You could also join a workout group, find a workout buddy, or change your environment or routine to reignite your passion for fitness.

Develop a Positive Self-Talk Routine

How you speak to yourself internally is vital to your fitness journey. Negative self-talk often cancels motivation, leading to a defeatist attitude, while positive self-talk can boost confidence and spark perseverance. Reminders of past achievements built into affirmations can create a habit of positive self-talk.

Practice Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindful meditation improves focus,  promotes mental clarity, and reduces anxiety, helping you manage the stress and frustration of fitness plateaus.
